Somuch has changed in the way we record our special moments today. Film used to be slow and required a lot of light to adequately capture a good portrait. The lighting was a direct imitation of the portrait lighting of the great masters, like Rembrandt and Sargent. In retrospect, however, that genre of formal portraiture reveals itself as merely an imitation of the great portrait artists’ oils. It was not a duplicate style; it was—and still is—a totally different medium because of the realism of photography.
